The Best Online Marketing Tips In Today's Age - Maynas Eric

To succeed in your online marketing efforts, you will need to work hard and be diligent. If you want your business to see profits, your work should be effective. You definitely don?t want to overwork while approaching things the wrong way. This information will help steer you in the right direction.

Giving your customers the chance to receive an Ezine is one of the most effective marketing techniques you can employ. Use pictures of your family to add personality. Try adding short humorous inputs about home life and employee relationships. Use a catchy subject line when you write the Ezine, in order to pique people?s curiosity. For instance, have the title refer to the fastest or simplest way to attain a certain goal.

Businesses are less personal nowadays due to the internet; it is almost like buying a product from an anonymous person. This works especially well for independently owned or small businesses who focus on relationship marketing and personal selling to attract customers for life.

TIP! Listen to what people are looking for and create a niche that satisfies that need. Why would you want to do this? By focusing on complaints, it?s easy to discover problems that need solving.

Be sure to include several special choices on your check out pages for orders. You could add about anything enticing here, from a buy-one, get-one deal to a certain percentage of savings on a bundle of items. It can help you eliminate surplus inventory while you boost your sales and can make your customers feel happy with an added bonus.

Power up your internet promotion! When you set up your landing page, make sure it is apparent what the subject and objective is. You should sell your niche on this page. It should be clear to the visitor what you?re promoting immediately upon visiting your site. You only have one opportunity to hold the attention of the reader, so if you make things complicated, they are bound to leave again.

People are impressed by power and an important title. You could for instance be the CEO of your small business. If you are not the owner, you can still adopt an impressive title. Make sure you sign all announcements and emails with name and title included.

TIP! Pay attention to even the small things when designing your website online. The title should be near the top corner of each page as well as a description of your site.

Hold promotions and events that will get people to your site. Try having a buy one get one sale on a product! When people visit your site to get the deal, they might find something else they want. Many times these visitors will leave not only with their promotional item, but with a variety of the other products you sell as well.

The Internet can be a difficult place for small businessmen to compete. Two ways to succeed: reset prices frequently, and check them against the competitor?s prices. Consider setting up your own Internet store as a means to allow customers to find all your products in one place.

Your customers can be offered a subscription of things they purchase. You could entice them by offering a discount for agreeing to receive a product delivery each month.

TIP! Make sure you diversify when you are planning your Internet marketing strategies. This is critical because your income may be slow when you start, and not pick up until you are already established.

It is helpful to have real-time leads when you are trying to sell something online. Real-time leads will unify both you and a potential customer during the moment in which this person is looking for product information. Since you contact the potential customers immediately after they request information, you increase the likelihood of generating sales from these leads.

Be sure to include plenty of original content so that people have a reason to visit your website, and also add as much rich content as you can. Your site needs to offer quality, original content that will be highly-ranked by search engines while still providing something of value to your visitors.

TIP! If you have ad space on your website, consider selling the space to a major company. This looks good to your viewers and validates your presence in the market.

Make it easy for others to link their websites to yours by using a linking button. People who share your interests will be happy to link to you, and you will enjoy additional traffic.

Observe your competitors. You could learn from their successes and mistakes. If you can easily picture yourself as a prospective customer for your competitors? products, this means that they are successful in at least one area. Use that information to improve your company?s approach.

Most product and service communications can benefit by the use of descriptive terms and phrases that will deliver gratification instantly or near-instant. You should emphasize the small amount of time that is required to make an order, the quickness that an order can be shipped or how fast they can be expected to see the results from using your particular product or service. A customer will view this as meaning your product is easy to order and quick to arrive.

TIP! To improve site traffic and thus increase sales utilize SEO content and offer unique, original content. This is especially important for online retailers who are selling the same products as a number of other sites, and each site is using the same manufacturer?s product description.

As you can see from the article above, it is very important to make sure that the effort you put into your Online marketing is the most effective effort, and points you in the right direction to increase your profits. By taking advantage of our common sense advice, you can be certain that your efforts will not be in vain.

Don't Let Your Home Become A Money Pit: Home Improvement Tips ...

Consider green alternatives to standard building materials when renovating or remodeling your home. Materials like cork and bamboo come from sustainable resources and are used to create flooring, furniture and other items that you can use to update your home in an environmentally conscious way. Using these materials is a great way to support eco-friendly practices and lessen your impact on the environment.

When making home improvements, it is important to check all of your faucets for leaks. A leaky faucet can waste a lot of water. If you run into a leaky faucet, be sure to repair it as soon as possible. When you wash your clothes, try using cold water. You can consider installing low flow showerheads, which will cut down on the amount of water used.

Paint your doors. If you have old, outdated hollow core doors in your home, those can easily be painted to make them brighter and looking newer. Simply take them off the hinges, throw them over a couple of saw horses outside, and give them a quick coat of primer first and then your choice of paint color.

Is your kitchen sink stopped up again? Have you tried products like Draino to no avail? Well, before you call that plumber, or buy a plumber snake, try to use a plunger first! Yup, the same thing that can unclog your toilet works just as fine when you are trying to unclog your kitchen sink. Just add a little water in the sink to create a seal around the plunger and plunge away!

One great way to make the inside of your home sparkle is to put new molding in. New molding helps create a fresh sense in your living space. You can purchase special molding with beautiful carvings on them to add an unique touch of elegance and style to your home.

If you would like your living room or dorm to have a contemporary clean feel to it, opt to buy a sofa with minimal cushioning and long, lean lines. Choose the sofa in a bold color such as black, red, or beige to make a statement in your area. You can dress it up with some zebra print or striped decorative pillows.

To make a small, cramped kitchen look larger, use lighter finishes for flooring, cabinets, counter tops, and walls, and leave the windows untreated or minimally treated to let in more light. All of these tricks help to create the illusion of a larger room, and the brightness will add further appeal while you spend time there.

Home improvement projects that involve changes to the plumbing can sometimes take unexpectedly longer. There are many instances where plumbing changes may require an extensive re-routing that was not identified during the planning phases. You can however plan for these uncertainties ahead of time by purchasing drinking water and making arrangements with neighbors to use their showers and toilets.

Changing a tire can be problematic if you don?t happen to be a very strong person. Loosening the lug nuts, in particular, can take more strength than many of us have. Use a cheater bar! A yard long piece of pipe that is just big enough to fit over the end of your lug wrench will give you that extra leverage to get the job done.

Do you now understand about home improvement? Do you know about tools and safety regulations and how to use them? Do you now know what it takes to do a good job? If you have an idea of how to answer these questions now, then you have read and understood what it takes to become better at home improvement.

If you want the best springfield mo home builders make sure you be methodical and choose the best provider for you.

Ex-Ottawa mayor Jim Durrell appointed to Order of Canada

Ex-Ottawa mayor Jim Durrell, pictured here in his home on Dec. 29, 2012, was awarded the Order of Canada.

Photograph by: Jean Levac , Ottawa Citizen/Postmedia News

OTTAWA ? When Jim Durrell got a phone call on Dec. 3 from Rideau Hall, and was told it concerned the Order of Canada, he assumed he was being asked to vouch for a nominee as part of a reference check.

When he was told that he was being appointed a Member of the Order, he replied, ?I?m speechless ? and that doesn?t happen very often to me.?

And as part of the award process, he was told he had to remain mum on the matter until its official announcement Dec. 30.

?It?s been the hardest secret I?ve ever had to keep,? he said.

But it?s finally official, and the former Ottawa mayor is now, along with 90 other distinguished countrymen and women, a newly minted member of the Order of Canada, free to hang the letters C.M. (or, in the case of the vaunted Companions and Officers of the Order, C.C. and O.C., respectively) after his name. Or simply mention them in conversation.

Durrell, 66, was appointed to the order for his decades-long contributions to Ottawa as mayor, businessman and volunteer. He?ll be presented his award by Governor General David Johnston at date still to be announced.

?To be honoured by your country like this is special,? he said over the weekend. ?To be recognized by your peers and community for things you don?t look to be recognized for is nice.

?My dad raised us with the mantra that the world should be a better place because you?ve been here, and that?s just how I lived and have raised our kids to live.?

He added that he hopes the beneficiaries of his and other appointees will be their children and grandchildren.

?I have grandkids who are six and four and who wouldn?t have any idea what the Order of Canada is,? he said, ?but I hope that as they grow older and start to understand and look back, one of the legacies I?ll leave is that everybody?s got to chip in to make this world a better place.?

Durrell was first elected to city council in 1980, and took over as mayor five years later when, following Marion Dewar?s resignation from the post, he defeated Marlene Catterall with nearly 60 per cent of the vote. Three years later, with no serious contenders running against him, he was the runaway winner for a second term, capturing more than 85 per cent of the ballots cast.

During his time as Ottawa?s mayor, Durrell was a strong proponent of raising the city?s profile through sports and tourism, and was instrumental in helping the city?s CFL franchise get a tax grant, bringing Triple-A baseball to town, hosting the 1988 Grey Cup and spearheading a bid to host the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

He was also part of the group that brought the Ottawa Senators back to the NHL and, in 1990, while still mayor, became the team?s first president, a career overlap that was criticized by many as a conflict of interest. In January 1991, he announced he was stepping down as mayor to devote all his efforts to the fledgling hockey club. He remained president for two years.

He currently owns Capital Dodge Chrysler Jeep and serves on a number of boards, including as past chairman of the Ottawa International Airport and chairman of the Ottawa Convention Centre.

His volunteer work extends to numerous organizations, including the Salvation Army, the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Kiwanis, the United Way and his church.

His Order of Canada medal caps off a year filled with tributes. In June he was awarded the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce?s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award, and three months later was given the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In November, he received the Order of Ottawa.

?If somebody had ever told me 45 years ago (that) this would be your life, I would have just said, ?Wow, what a ride!? I don?t know how else to describe it.?

Apart from its 53rd mayor, Ottawa?s halls of power, past and present, are well-represented in the latest group of Order of Canada appointees, with former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Louise Charron earning one of two nods to the Order?s Companion level, the highest of its three ranks. The other was given to Montreal banker and Concordia University chancellor L. Jacques M?nard.

Additionally, Sheila Copps and Brian Tobin ? half of the federal Liberal party?s 1980s-era Rat Pack ? were made Officers of the Order of Canada, as were MP and former Montreal Canadiens? goalie Ken Dryden, aboriginal leader Phil Fontaine and former MP Howard McCurdy. Journalists Stevie Cameron and Michael Enright were also made members of the Order.

Other notable recipients announced Sunday include writer Kildare Dobbs; former NHLer and 1972 Summit Series hero Paul Henderson; Quebec judo coach Hiroshi Nakamura; Dani?le Sauvageau, who coached the women?s national hockey team to a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics; Indigo Books founder Heather Reisman; and cosmetics icon Lise Watier.

Real Estate: Housing recovery to continue in 2013 | Fresno Bee ...

The tumultuous Valley real estate market hit a turning point on the road to recovery this year when home prices started a consistent climb.

The market also saw mortgage interest rates remain at historic lows, increased buyer demand as a result of fewer homes for sale and a slowdown in foreclosure activity too.

So, what does that mean for real estate in 2013?

Local Realtors are optimistic that these factors will bring good tidings for next year, but a housing expert says to be careful ? more foreclosures could be in store.

John Shamshoian, the newly elected president of the Fresno Association of Realtors remains positive that home sales will pick up in the new year.

?Traditional sales rose significantly in 2012 and that trend should continue,? Shamshoian said. And ?more home sellers have regained enough equity to sell their current home and take advantage of this market to purchase a more expensive home.?

Other buyers, like those who have reestablished their credit after a foreclosure, are also now qualifying for new loans, Shamshoian said.

But how about that shadow inventory of foreclosures rumored for years now to explode into the market?

Shamshoian doesn?t expect foreclosures to increase much based on this year?s activity which showed half the number of foreclosures compared to 2011.

But Fresno State?s housing expert Andrew Hansz, the director of the Gazarian Real Estate Center said ?expect inventories to rise as we work through more of the distressed properties.?

The market isn?t on track for a full recovery yet and could get more complicated as the federal government works on its fiscal cliff issues, Hansz said.

?The key to a sustainable real estate market recovery is job growth,? Hansz said. ?The uncertainty caused by the fiscal cliff issues we currently face is not conducive to business expansion and job growth? 2013 could be an unlucky year as the fiscal cliff is a direct and immediate threat to our economy and a real estate market recovery.?

Re: Bug that causes the program to close - Family Tree Maker ...

What you have experienced is, I believe, a re-occurence of the out of memory problem. It has been reported many times on this board. It was much worse two updates ago but still happens from time to time. If you monitor your RAM usage (using for example Task Manager) you can see the RAM use increase until there is none left then the program crashes. I still get this from time to time but no where near the frequency of two updates ago.

What I described was a specific sequence of steps that cause the program to terminate. It does not involve unusually high memory use and always happens with the same sequence of steps. Just an unusual bug that I've learned to keep away from. In other words when I edit something I always press Tab or Enter to finish the edit.

Christian politician quits Egypt upper house as tensions persist

CAIRO (Reuters) - A Christian member of Egypt's upper house of parliament quit on Thursday, reflecting persistent political tensions just a day after the Islamist-dominated chamber took over legislative authority under a contentious new constitution.

The Islamist-backed charter, approved in a referendum this month, is meant to be the cornerstone of a democratic and economically stable Egypt. But the opposition says it is too Islamist and does nothing to protect minorities.

The resignation of Nadia Henry, who represents the Anglican Church in the upper house, also highlights worries by Egypt's Christians, who make up about a tenth of its 83 million population, about political gains made by Islamists since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a 2011 revolution.

Under pressure to show tolerance towards all groups, President Mohamed Mursi appointed 90 members including Christians, Liberals and women to the upper house - with Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and ultra-conservative Salafis - last week.

But in a resignation letter published by the state-owned al-Ahram newspaper, Henry said liberal and other minority groups were not represented properly in the chamber.

"I agreed to the membership of the Shura Council (upper house) in the context of consensus that stressed all civil forces will get appointed," Henry wrote.

"Since that did not happen, I hope you accept my apology for not accepting the appointment," she said.

She did not attend the upper house session on Wednesday, the first with the appointed members.

The opposition fears that the Shura Council upper house, which will hold legislative authority until a new parliament is elected in early 2013, will issue laws curbing freedoms.

Mursi signed the new constitution into law this week after two thirds of Egyptian voters approved it in a two-stage referendum this month which the opposition said was marred by widespread violations.

Propelled to power by his Muslim Brotherhood allies this year, Mursi says the constitution and a subsequent vote to elect a permanent lower house will help stop political unrest and allow him to focus on burning economic issues.

Henry was one of the 90 members handpicked by Mursi into the 270-seat council. She was not immediately available for comment.

Any further resignations would threaten the legitimacy of the Shura Council at a time when it is expected to move fast with difficult reforms key to helping Egypt's battered economy.

Two-thirds of the upper house were elected in a vote this year, with one third appointed by the president, some of whom are members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and other ultra-conservative Salafis.

Mursi and his Islamist allies have urged the opposition to engage in national unity talks to achieve much needed consensus to help end an economic crisis that has widened the budget deficit and sent the Egyptian pound to a eight-year low.

"We stress again that the nation should achieve internal reconciliation and forget its differences," the Muslim Brotherhood's supreme guide, Mohamed Badei, told Egyptians in his weekly message.

"Let's work seriously to end the reciprocal wars of attrition. We are in an urgent need to unify ranks and group together and focus our capabilities and assets to the general benefit."

The constitution has come under attack from Mursi's opponents after Christians and liberals quit an assembly tasked with drafting the constitution earlier, saying the document gave no guarantees of a civil state and threatened freedoms.

When it comes to food, Philly?s got it covered. In 2012 we welcomed lots of great new bars and restaurants that have proved to be well worth the anticipation.

Philly restaurants have cleaned up in the awards and accolades department and our favorite chefs have been featured left and right.

But all of that?s not to say that 2013 won?t be just as exciting for the local restaurant scene.

Next year, some of the city?s favorite restaurants are expanding, new restaurants are opening and transports are setting up shop within the city limits.

Below, a look back at 12 Philadelphia dining highlights from 2012 and 13 we?re looking forward to for 2013:

12 in 2012

1. Fette Sau: Thanks to a partnership between Stephen Starr and Brooklyn Restaurateur Joe Carroll, Philadelphia gets a taste of NYC?s prized BBQ spot, Fette Sau. Using all local meats and smoking them in house, this place puts up some serious competition for best BBQ in the city. The down-home vibe and extensive bourbon menu add some leverage, too.

2. Le Bec-Fin: The reinvention of what some have called the country?s best French restaurant was one of the year?s most exciting (and relieving) success stories. The service is still impeccable, the food excellent, the atmosphere elegant ? but it?s all just a little bit more accessible.

3. Brauhaus Schmitz expands and adds Wursthaus Schmitz in Reading Terminal Market: Nothing wrong with plattering up Parma ham and Spanish lomo, but the latest trend in Philly kitchens is do-it-yourself (DIY) sausages, terrines and p?t?s. Meat eaters have already pounced on the German-style Wursthaus Schmitz in the Reading Terminal Market, a spinoff of South Street?s Brauhaus Schmitz, offering the restaurant?s acclaimed homemade sausages, salads, pretzels and sandwiches such as the Bavarian, complete with bauernwurst, horseradish mayo, Bavarian coleslaw and crispy fried onions. The restaurant?s South Street home base also expanded into to accommodate 2,000 additional square feet of space, and 10 more taps.

4. Red Owl Tavern and Stratus Lounge: The opening of Philadelphia?s first new hotel in Old City?s Historic District in years also brought two new bar/restaurants to Independence Mall: Red Owl Tavern, helmed by Chef Guillermo Tellez of Square 1682 fame, and the super chic Stratus Rooftop Lounge.

5. Pizza Brain and Little Baby?s Ice Cream: Fishtown artist Brian Dywer, aka Pizza Brain, joined by a few of his pizza obsessed friends, has amassed a Guinness World Record holding 1,000-piece collection of pizza memorabilia. And you can check it out for yourself at the world?s very first pizza museum, right here in Philadelphia, complete with artisanal pizza restaurant. Right next door is Little Baby?s headquarters, letting Philadelphians enjoy the gourmet, milky goodness of their delicious ice-cream year-round. With crazy good flavors like Earl Grey Sriracha, Chai Coconut, Thai Peanut and even Pizza (paying homage to their pizza museum neighbors at Pizza Brain), this place is a hit for good reason.

Check out the rest of our 2012 highlights, plus 13 food stories we?re excited about for 2013, below.

6. Federal Donuts opens a second location: Next time you think about ?Running on Dunkin,? think again. Philadelphia?s new Federal Donuts now has a downtown location in addition to the Pennsport spot. With cool creations like maple bacon, strawberry fennel, turkish mocha, spicy PB&J and the Korean-style chicken and donuts, these guys are definitely upping the deep-fried ante.

7. Rittenhouse Tavern: Rittenhouse Square?s east stretch along 18th Street is one of the best dining corridors in the city, featuring Parc, Rouge and Devon plus a. kitchen and Serafina right across the street. Joining the cadre this year was the Rittenhouse Tavern, a brand new venture replacing Gardenia inside the Philadelphia Art Alliance featuring a quaint courtyard out back for outside dining sheltered by trees, the perfect compromise for dining on the Square without all the hustle and bustle.

8. Vernick: When a Jean-Georges Vongerichten prot?g? returns home to his native city after a blistering career in top restaurants around the world, Vernick Food & Drink is born. The new casual bistro from Chef Greg Vernick features urbane-yet-homey offerings like potato ravioli with braised lamb and long beans. It?s received across-the-board flattering reviews. For good reason.

9. Hop Sing Laundromat: The unmarked storefront of Chinatown?s mysterious speakeasy Hop Sing Laundromat belies the liquid delights within, which pay spirited tribute to the storming of Normandy, the first African-American woman doctor and the late author David Foster Wallace, among others.

10. Morgan?s Pier: A beer garden at the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge, Morgan?s Pier offers 20 draft beer and easygoing eats like corn-and-blue-crab fritters, blackened tuna burgers and fried-chicken tacos, along with Little Baby?s Ice Cream, Federal Donuts and a packed schedule of live music.

11. Shake Shack opens: Shake Shack finally made its way to Philadelphia this year. It was a pretty huge story for the Philadelphia dining scene, and the city at large. The 20th and Sansom spot is stocked with Philly-specific custard flavors, addictively juicy burgers, fries, hot dogs and more. Even after more than six months open, lunch lines still stretch around the corner. They must be doing something right.

12. Alla Spina opens: Marc Vetri?s newest restaurant, Alla Spina, opened on North Broad Street and like the rest of his restaurants in the city, it did not disappoint.

13 in 2013

1. Serpico: Finally, Peter Serpico, of New York?s Momofuku fame, will be opening up an eponymously named eatery on South Street with the help of Stephen Starr.

2. Noord: A Dutch BYO from Chicago chef Joncarl Lachman is slated to open on Tasker Avenue in East Passyunk.

3. Sophia: Also in South Philly, one-time local chef Chris Lee will be developing a new concept where Salt and Pepper currently stands. Lee returns to the city after a highly touted stint in New York.

4. Ramen Revolution: 2013 may well be the year of the noodle. After decades of a relatively ramen-free existence, Philly?s got a whole slew of new Japanese style joints: Nom Nom, Hiro Ramen House, Terakawa Ramen, Green Wasabi and more. For 2013, there will be no more running around to find Cheu Noodle Bar, as the popular Philly pop-up has secured a spot in Midtown Village.

5. Volver: Jose Garces will be opening a street-level restaurant at the Kimmel Center called Volver. The restaurant is set to open in spring 2013.

6. Honey?s Sit ?n Eat: At last, 2013 should see the opening of Honey?s Sit ?n Eat?s second location, at 21st and South. The Northern Liberties favorite will be bringing their tasty comfort food to eager Graduate Hospital brunchers after much anticipation.

7. Joe: One of the Big Apple?s favorite coffee shops, Joe, is coming to two spots in Philadelphia in 2013, in Rittenhouse Square and University City.

8. Metropolitan Cafe: Metropolitan Bakery will be opening a sit-down cafe a stone?s throw from their current location in Rittenhouse Square. The cafe will be full of tasty baked goods, soups, a full espresso bar and more.

9. Talula?s Daily : The folks at Talula?s Garden will be opening up Talula?s Daily right next door to the restaurant?s Washington Square spot. Talula?s Daily will be a market full of all of the same types of things that make Talula?s Garden awesome, but with an urban and high-end general store twist.

10. Boot & Saddle: South Broad Street?s Boot & Saddle will reopen in 2013, thanks to Avram Hornik and team. The bar will serve as a live music venue in South Philly. R5 Productions will book live acts at the establishment.

11. Dolphin Tavern: Avram Hornik?s Four Corners Management will also be resurrecting the recently closed Dolphin Tavern. Expect the South Philly spot to open its doors once again in 2013.

12. Mac?s Tavern Rittenhouse: Now you can get your It?s Always Sunny on in two different Philly bars. Mac?s Tavern will soon be extending beyond Old City, opening a second location on Chestnut Street near Rittenhouse Square.

13. Philadelphia Live Arts Building Restaurant: The old high pressure fire service building at Columbus Boulevard and Race Street has recently obtained a liquor license and will soon be the Philadelphia Live Arts? fantastic new home. The building will boast a 225-seat theater, an outdoor area and a 2,000 square-foot restaurant and bar. Another snazzy addition to the revitalized Delaware River Waterfront.

Spray Foam Insulation and Energy Rebates

The end of the year prompts most homeowners to prepare for the onset of the coldest weather, and the resulting increase in heating bills. Energy companies also anticipate this trend and begin offering incentives for their customers to have their home?s energy efficiency evaluated and to make energy-saving improvements as well.

Now is the time to check your power bill or call your energy representative and ask if rebates are available on home energy audits and the installation of weatherization products that can prevent air transfer, increasing the efficiency of your HVAC system. The home improvements themselves will reduce your monthly energy bills, but power companies often offer rebates to customers who can demonstrate that they have taken measure to reduce their energy consumption.

You might also check with your tax professional as the new tax season approaches to find out if there are any incentives you qualify for if you have improvements made to your insulation. Some years are more lucrative than others, but it is always worth looking into when you are considering contracting for weatherization and home improvement services.

Don?t wait and miss an opportunity to save! Call your power company today, then call Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. for a free quote and an evaluation of your weatherization and energy-saving options!

Landmark Chinese study: Intestinal bacteria control obesity

The world of obesity science is about to be turned on its head. Scientists in Changhai, China announced in a paper published Dec. 13 that they had isolated a bacterium from a 385-pound man?s intestines, and used it to plump up mice that are specially bred to resist obesity.

They found that the bacteria, from a toxin-producing microbe called??enterobacter cloacae,? made up 35 percent of all the microorganisms in the human volunteer?s digestive tract. But a diet formulated specifically to kill off those bacteria succeeded in reducing his levels to below what could be detected in a laboratory.

He lost 113 pounds in?23 weeks.

His high blood pressure disappeared. So did his type-2 diabetes and his fatty liver disease.

The research paper, published in the International Society for Microbial Ecology?s peer-reviewed??ISME Journal,? is not the first evidence that gut microbes play a significant part in weight gain, but it?s the most convincing to date.

Lead author?Zhao Liping, an associate dean of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University?s?School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, made waves when the journal ?Science? profiled him in June 2012.

The 200-pound scientist with a 43-inch waist had dropped nearly 45 pounds, he said, with a diet including whole grains and fermented?Chinese yams?and bitter melons ? so-called ?prebiotic? foods that can reportedly change the balance of bacteria in the human digestive tract.

But with between 10 trillion and 100 trillion bacteria in a typical person?s gut, identifying which specific ones have the capacity to make us fat and which ones might make us thin is a tall order.

A team led by Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, first determined in 2004?that microbes in the intestines could be a major factor in how the body regulates fat storage.

Adult bodies, according to Gordon, contain 10 microbial cells for every human cell. And part of our evolution involved working our a mutually beneficial relationship with all those freeloading bacteria.

Their role, he suggested in that 2004 paper, involved picking up and depositing extra energy from our diets wherever the body needed to store it ? usually as fat.

At?a?press conference Tuesday?in?Shanghai, according to China Daily, Zhao Liping explained how it works.

?The?endotoxin released?by?the?bacterium,? Zhao said, ?can?activate?a?gene?that?helps?generate?fat.And?it?also?deactivates?a?gene?that?consumes?fat.?

13 surrender in Illinois fraternity drinking death

CHICAGO (AP) ? About half of the 22 fraternity members charged with hazing after a pledge died following a night of heavy drinking in Illinois had turned themselves in as of Tuesday night, police said.

Members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity were charged after an investigation into the Nov. 2 death of NIU freshman David Bogenberger, 19. He was found unresponsive at the fraternity house in DeKalb, the community about 65 miles west of Chicago that's home to Northern Illinois University. The DeKalb County Coroner's Office said toxicology results found his blood alcohol content was about five times the legal limit for driving.

Police Lt. Jason Leverton said the DeKalb Police Department has seen other hazing incidents in the past, but they typically have involved a handful of people suspected of hazing one or two others. He said this case was different because of the number of people ? both pledges and fraternity members ? believed to have been involved.

"This is something we haven't quite seen before," Leverton said.

The coroner ruled Bogenberger's cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia, with alcohol intoxication as a contributing cause.

The DeKalb Police Department said its investigation found about 19 pledges, including Bogenberger, attended the Nov. 1 event. Police said the event was referred to as "Parent's Night" because pledges were assigned "Greek dads and moms" ? upperclassmen and women from the fraternity and associated sororities ? who served as mentors. Several pledges besides Bogenberger reported getting sick and passing out, according to police.

"The event that night involved the pledges rotating between several rooms in the fraternity house, being asked a series of questions, and then being provided cups of vodka and other liquor to drink," police said in a statement. "This resulted in the pledges drinking a large quantity of alcohol in about a two-hour time period."

Leverton said pledges were told to drink regardless of whether they answered questions correctly.

Five men face charges of felony hazing; police say those men were most involved in the planning of the event. The 17 others face misdemeanor hazing charges.

Of the 13 men to surrender so far, seven did so in DeKalb. Leverton said those seven posted bond and were released. He said he didn't know if the others, who turned themselves in to police in other communities, also had posted bond.

In a statement Monday, Bogenberger's family called on college administrators and fraternity officials to help put an end to hazing and other "initiation rituals."

NIU said 31 students are accused of violating the school's code of conduct. Those students could face penalties ranging from reprimand to expulsion.

University officials also said they work with fraternities and sororities to educate members about the risks of drinking, blood alcohol content, responsible drinking, signs of intoxication and alcohol poisoning. Training is held at the start of the academic year for members of the Greek community, and more than half of an organization's members must participate in a training session in order to hold a social event that includes alcohol.

NIU policy requires fraternities and sororities to register social events and get university approval. The university said Pi Kappa Alpha leaders did not officially register the Nov. 1 event with NIU or the fraternity's national chapter.

The international fraternity suspended the local chapter and said it would cooperate in the investigation. In a statement from its Memphis, Tenn., headquarters, the fraternity said it has "strict standards with respect to alcohol and hazing."

Three ways to detonate a job interview

A job interview is an artificial process.

The questions are esoteric; the setting is forced; the rules and conventions are convoluted.

Attending an interview is rarely synonymous with how you can be expected to perform on the job or the regular way that the business operates.

But even the best candidate can destroy their employment chances in a job interview.

Often when we interview people who have been in one role for most of their career, it?s apparent they lack so much experience in interviewing that they ruin their chances with potential employers, even if they could be fantastic in a role.

Interviews can easily turn nasty. Here are three of the most common interview etiquette faux pas that I have observed:

1. Being obviously motivated by money

Asking about salary is an appropriate question, if handled properly. When you are asked about motivations to leave your employer, however, crying foul over your pay is not. No employer ever wants to think that a candidate is solely motivated by money. Responsibility, career advancement, opportunity, a better work culture or life balance: they?re all good reasons. They?ll sit well with the interviewer. But relying solely on money as a motivator? What guarantee would the employer have that the candidate wouldn?t quickly up-stumps for a bigger carrot?

2. Failing to engage all interviewers

I?ve been guilty of this, so I?m not preaching from an ivory tower on this one. It?s actually really tricky to engage all interviewers when you are facing a panel. Still, it?s a surprisingly common bug-bear from prospective employers. Focussing your attention on just one person (the person asking the questions, the most senior person in the room, or even the interviewer who just seems to be smiling at you a lot) can cause all sorts of odd perceptions.

3. Acting like you?ve already got the job.

The single greatest mistake I?ve seen people make going into second or subsequent interviews is to assume that they have the position sewn up. If you use assumptive phrases like ?I will? instead of ?If I?m successful, I would?? you might as well be saying to the interviewer ?I?ve already got this job, so let?s cut to the chase.?

The truth is that until there?s a signed letter of offer returned to the organisation, the job can still disappear. There?s a mantra I use whenever I?m in that situation, especially when I feel that an interview is going well. ?I don?t have the job yet, I don?t have the job yet, I don?t...? ? you get the picture.

Interviewing is a learned skill. The only real way to avoid making these kinds of mistakes is to put in the necessary preparation and practice beforehand. Just being the right person isn?t enough.?
