How would you change the Jawbone Up?

Image

Ordinarily, we'd be dismissive if you answered that question with "Doy, make it work!" but in the special case of the Jawbone Up, it's entirely apt. The wristband promised plenty of technological advances that would track your sleep, calories burned and diarize your food intake, all within the confines of a slender cord wrapped around your wrist. The downside? A significant proportion of the units conked out days after being opened, forcing the company to offer no-questions-asked refunds and halt production. So, what we want to know is: do you have a working Up? Does it still work? Do you like it? If Hosain Rahman was reading the comments below, how would you suggest he goes about fixing things?

Katy Perry Spotted With New Man At Coachella

Singer is seen kissing Florence and the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd.

It was more than just the music that Katy Perry took in over the weekend at Coachella in California. The single pop star was seen also taking in the affections of what appeared to be a new boyfriend.

The singer was spotted holding hands, kissing and generally canoodling with Florence and the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd. This was the second weekend in a row that Perry was at Coachella. She debuted her new hair color at last week's festivities, and this week, it looked like she was debuting her new love.

Click for pix of Katy and Robert canoodling at Coachella

The couple were photographed Sunday. Perry was in a lavender romper to match her brand-new purple locks, while Ackroyd sported a plain, white T-shirt and jeans. When Perry tweeted about this past weekend's festivities, she made no mention of her new beau, instead writing about Radiohead and her dream to make a Sublime hologram happen, à la the much-talked-about Tupac Shakur hologram.

Perry split from husband Russell Brand back in December after two years of marriage. She's remained relatively low-key in the love department since the split. She had been momentarily linked to football star Tim Tebow, but she laughed off the rumors at the Super Bowl, when she dedicated her track "Peacock" to the quarterback.

While Katy seemed to be all smiles while chilling at Coachella with Ackroyd, sources told Us Weekly that the singer is still dealing with her split from Brand. "Katy's been trying to get [Russell] back!" a friend said. "She's a lost soul right now." Another friend added, "Right now, Katy and Russell are trying to get to the point where they can at least be friends."

Samsung's new Galaxy Phone gets official teaser (video)

Samsung's new Galaxy Phone gets official teaser (video)

The countdown is over and Samsung's not offering much to whet our appetite. A medley of opaque angles of galactic travel are meant to represent next week's big news story, alongside some brief claims of technology that fits easily in your hand. It finishes all too soon on those glossy enamel puddles shown above. The second trailer reveals more of the same, with Samsung promising the device will become "a natural side of life", throwing in a quick jibe at those rival smartphone-carrying "sheep". While we reckon we broadly know what to expect when it comes to internal hardware, we're still itching see how Samsung's looking to reinvigorate its phone design following HTC's stylish smartphone salvo. Well, at least it's just over a week left to wait.

Obama Wants Sanctions On Those Using Technology In Human Rights Abuses

cui-sealMuch has been said about the role social media has come to play in the global landscape over the last few years. Whether one sees it as the tool of revolutions or not, Facebook, Twitter, and other media played an integral role in organizing the socio-political upheavals in Egypt, Libya, and across the Middle East and North Africa, allowing those oppressed and marginalized by despotic regimes to communicate and organize, and to expose human rights violations. Of course, social and other forms of digital media have just as much potential for ill as they do for use among democracy advocates -- something that has not gone unnoticed in the White House. According to a report from the Washington Post, President Obama today plans to issue an executive order that gives U.S. officials the ability to impose sanctions on foreign bodies that use these "new technologies" to carry out human rights violations.

Help for land-mine victims in Kabul

After three decades of war, Afghanistan is littered with land mines. A nonprofit employs disabled land-mine victims to make demining equipment, and funds rehabilitation clinics.

By Olivia Katrandjian,?Contributor, Arthur Nazaryan,?Contributor / March 30, 2012

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?Haroon Hamdard edged toward a suspected explosive device lying in a field in western Afghanistan. His job as a demining worker was to identify such devices and figure out how to render them harmless. But the young worker stumbled. His foot hit a rock that tumbled forward and detonated a small bomb. Mr. Hamdard was left in critical condition, and lost his right arm. He was fitted with a barely functioning prosthetic arm. The married father of one was unemployed for the next six years. Hamdard finally got a job at Spark, a workshop in Kabul funded by a US nonprofit where people who have been disabled by land mines make demining equipment. Sale of the equipment funds rehabilitation clinics, one of which will finally outfit Hamdard with a better prosthetic arm.

After three decades of war, Afghanistan is littered with land mines. Insurgents have been increasingly conflating foreign aid with foreign occupation and demining organizations feel the brunt of this. The majority of nongovernmental workers detained by armed groups in 2011 were deminers ? the Taliban tend not to appreciate those who try to remove their bombs. Many Afghans continue to be injured by land mines, but the level of care Hamdard received is rarely available outside Kabul.

HTC One S for T-Mobile gets more official, coming April 25

T-Mobile One S

If you've been waiting for news about T-Mobile's HTC One S, you're in the right place -- they have just announced availability and pricing of the sleek new phone, and the good news is that it's not months away. The One S will be available at T-Mobile stores nationwide starting April 25, and it checks in at $199 with a new agreement.

The One S looks to be one of the sexiest phones HTC has ever put out, being super thin, with great specs and Sense 4.0. HTC knows that the road to the top of the Android food chain isn't easy, but with devices like this and the rest of the HTC One line they are on the right track. The review is coming shortly, but in the meantime have a gander at the press release, after the break.

Jennifer Lopez Enlists Enrique Iglesias For First World Tour

Star planning 60-date trek through U.S., South America, Europe and Asia this summer.

With a hot new single, "Dance Again," and an upcoming greatest hits package to promote, Jennifer Lopez is hitting the road this summer, and she's taking Enrique Iglesias with her.

The "American Idol" judge is set to launch a 60-date world tour in South America in June and will be joined by her "Mouth 2 Mouth" duet partner Iglesias. A source close to Lopez told Celebuzz she "is very excited about him joining the tour."

"This will be a huge tour, complete with a lavish set, full band and team of dancers," the source added.

While concert promoter AEG has not confirmed all dates, Lopez and Iglesias will reportedly visit the United States, South America, Europe and Asia this summer after this season of "Idol" concludes. The tour will snake through Venezuela, Chile, Argentina and Brazil before returning to the U.S. for a planned second round of production rehearsals with shows beginning here in mid-July.

Though she went on a brief tour with then-husband Marc Anthony in 2007, Lopez is looking at this trek as her first-ever full-on world tour. "I did a little minitour with Marc right when I was pregnant [with twins Max and Emme]," Lopez told Ellen DeGeneres last year. "We just did, like, 20 shows. But I've never really done the world tour thing."

Iglesias was previously set to join Britney Spears on her "Femme Fatale" tour last year but pulled out just hours after the announcement was made, citing his belief that he was set to be Spears' co-headliner, not her opening act.

Are you excited to see Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias on the road? Let us know in the comments below.

Event honors cancer victim ? Region ? Traverse City Record-Eagle

TRAVERSE CITY ? Nikki Schweitzer remembers her aunt's zest for life, distinctive laugh and loving heart.

The Traverse City Central High School senior created Hair for Hope to honor Lori Stabile, who died June 3, 2011, after a four-year battle with cancer. Stabile, 43, lived in Grand Rapids with her husband, Paul, and three children.

Schweitzer and 40 other Central High students ? and counting ? will have their hair cut Thursday during school lunch hours. Volunteers from area styling salons will harvest the locks for donation to the Panteen Beautiful Lengths program, which creates wigs for women with cancer.

Her aunt, a great inspiration to Schweitzer, wore wigs during treatments.

"I am planning on donating my hair so that people like her, people with cancer raging on the inside of their bodies, can feel beautiful on the outside as well," Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer said her aunt did not let a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006 or bone and liver cancer found in 2010 get her down. Stabile kept her positive attitude even when cancer returned two years after she was medically declared in remission. She lived by the quote: "Not live like you are dying but die like you are living."

"She was a very happy person, to this day I can still hear her laugh," Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer received support from school administration to arrange Hair for Hope. She spread the word to students by talking with friends, putting up posters and making a Facebook page.

Hair for Hope dovetails with Central High School's emphasis on service learning, said Jay Larner, a school principal who worked with Schweitzer on the event.

"We want our students to look beyond themselves and give back to their community," he said "The Hair for Hope event is a great way for students to be part of a great cause."

Schweitzer, a high-energy, upbeat person who is co-president of the school's National Honor Society, exemplifies leadership at the school.

"She is striving to lead change," Larner said. "She wants to make a difference, not just at our school, but in our community and the world."

The idea of a personal makeover after Schweitzer's braces came off in December sparked Hair for Hope. After deciding to cut and donate her hair as part of the transformation, she went online to determine the exact requirements. The Panteen Beautiful Lengths website included information on creating a hair donation event.

Schweitzer, whose graduation date falls on the first anniversary of her aunt's death, decided to go for it.

"This is just a passion that grew into a program," she said.

Schweitzer's hair stylist was already booked, but contacting area salons netted Hair for Hope volunteers.

"Stylists were really very accepting ? quite excited to help," Schweitzer said.

Hopes fade for 135 feared dead in Pakistan avalanche

The Pakistani military on Sunday dug through snow, boulders and slush in an increasingly desperate search for 135 people buried in an avalanche, as hopes faded of finding any survivors.

Nearly 36 hours after a wall of snow crashed into a remote army camp high up in the mountains of Kashmir, rescuers were yet to recover any survivors or even bodies from the Siachen Glacier, where Pakistani and Indian troops face off.

The camp was engulfed between 5:00am and 6:00am on Saturday -- perhaps when some were sleeping -- by a mass of snow, stones, mud and slush more than 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) wide and 25 metres high, the military said in a statement.

About 180 military personnel and 60 civilian rescuers were braving freezing temperatures at the inhospitable site close to the de facto border with India, in area known as the world's highest battlefield, the military said.

Experts familiar with the glacier said there was little hope of finding survivors -- the military said overnight that 135 people were missing from the camp, including 124 soldiers from the 6th Northern Light Infantry battalion.

"There is no hope, there is no chance at all," mountaineering expert Colonel Sher Khan told AFP.

"You can survive only in the first 5-10 minutes," said Khan. "The casualties in avalanches occur due to pressure of heavy weight, extreme cold and lack of oxygen."

The powerful army chief General Ashfaq Kayani visited the epicentre of the disaster and "supervised rescue operations himself", the military said.

"The avalanche of such a magnitude was unprecedented in last 20 years of this Battalion Headquarters existence at Gayari," he said.

General Kayani instructed the commanders "to optimally utilize all available resources at their disposal and leave no stone unturned to reach out to the entrapped personnel," it said.

"It's a huge, huge avalanche," a senior military officer told AFP, adding rescue work would take several days.

Specially trained search-and-rescue teams of army engineers equipped with the latest locating gadgets and heavy machinery had arrived, the military statement said, joining rescue units aided by sniffer dogs and helicopters.

"Adequate medical staff has been made available for the treatment of injured persons in forward field hospitals," it added.

A tailor and two hairdressers were among the civilians missing in the thick snow in the militarised region of Kashmir, which has caused two of the three wars between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947 from Britain.

The United States Sunday expressed its "deep concern" for the soldiers trapped in the avalanche and offered assistance in the search operations, the US embassy said.

"We offer our condolences for those who have lost their lives as a result of the avalanche," it said.

"The United States is ready to assist Pakistan in search, rescue and recovery operations."

Siachen became a flashpoint when India occupied key areas in 1984, including the heights, prompting Pakistan to immediately respond by deploying its own forces.

The nuclear-armed rivals fought a fierce battle over Siachen in 1987, raising fears of all-out conflict, although the guns on the glacier have largely fallen silent since a slow-moving peace process was launched in 2004.

India and Pakistan have spent heavily to keep a military presence on the glacier, where temperatures can plunge to minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 95F).

New Delhi reportedly spends more than 40 million rupees ($800,000) daily on its Siachen deployment -- a figure that does not include additional wages and bonuses.

Experts have previously said that India has around 5,000 troops on the glacier, while Pakistan has less than half that number. The harsh weather and altitude claim many more lives than actual fighting.

Avalanches and landslides frequently block roads and leave communities isolated in the mountains of Pakistan, neighbouring Afghanistan and in Kashmir.

In February, at least 16 Indian soldiers on duty in the mountains of Kashmir were killed when two avalanches swept through army camps.

President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday became the first Pakistani head of state since 2005 to visit India, for a one-day trip aimed at building goodwill.

Save your marriage

It seems like the world is their oyster whenever a couple first gets married. Marriage is anything but easy and you can quickly find yourself on the road to divorce with all of the hardships that you?ll face. Approximately 50% of all married couples are deciding to call it quits every year. You will need to work very hard to avoid becoming a statistic. If you are having issues in your marriage, then you will need to work on using various strategies to keep from getting divorced. People who are trying to save their marriage routinely turn to marriage counseling.

You may be wondering exactly what marriage counseling involves. When you sign up for counseling, a licensed therapist or counselor will talk to you and your spouse in an effort to get you to work through your problems. The professional counselor attempts to uncover any hidden or undisclosed problems that the couple struggles to find a solution for.

?

You will find yourself subjected to many different types of questions and you may be wondering exactly what types of questions you?ll have to answer.

A good counselor will provide an unbiased opinion after listening to your problems. The viewpoint will help them establish an understanding for both partners and create an environment that is safe for each partner to share their feelings. Because humans are complicated beings, the relationship may be impacted by present concerns, future anxieties, and past issues that are unresolved. In addition to current relationship problems, relationships that couples have had in the past may be to blame in some way, so they may cover past relationship dynamics as well.

The relationship can?t be saved based on just one person?s testimony, so both people will need to get their feelings out in the open. Counselors will teach you how to deal with your current problems as well as give you a few ways to deal with future issues that may pop up.

?

Plenty of marriages have issues because of children. Does the couple in therapy have children? If so, how do the parents handle the situation with their kids? The counselor absolutely has to discuss issues that involve the children since their safety and welfare is the main concern.

Something else that your counselor may touch on over the course of your sessions is your particular goal for your marriage. Goals are not only an important part of a marriage relationship, but also in counseling. To ensure that the relationship keeps progressing at a good pace, the counselor may ask you both to setup your own separate goals. Doc No. 34Sdlhgsdl -sds

What is a Trademark Attorney?

If you manage or work in a large business then you know that most larger businesses will have their own lawyers. This is because most companies are looking to protect their company trademark. A trademark is an important aspect of any company, and the trademark acts as the official signature of that company. It will help individuals who are interested in your products or services know that the product was made by your company. Many businesses even very small businesses will decide to register for a trademark right away. The process is fairly easy, but since it is a legal process it is important that you hire a trademark attorney to help you.

While many people have heard of trademark attorneys many people do not know exactly what a trademark attorney is or what they do. In basic terms, a trademark attorney is someone that oversees the trademark process from start to finish.? One of the main duties of a trademark lawyer is to help their clients through the application process.

Many people do not realize how complex of a process this really is when they go through it the first time or if they don?t have the help of an attorney.

There are a few key services that a trademark attorney will provide you with as they help you through this process. First they will help clarify the important terms and things you need to know about trademark law to make sure you are completely up to date with these laws and fully understand what they are. The lawyer will also be there to help their client through the entire application process to make sure that all of the necessary paperwork is filled out. There are times when people try to do this without the help of a trademark attorney they will miss certain paperwork or will end up filling out forms or paperwork incorrectly.

This causes many people to get denied for their trademark and wastes a great deal of their time and money.

A trademark attorney isn?t just any general attorney, a Trademark lawyer is a legal professional that has had specific training in trademark law. This means that a quality trademark attorney will have the training and experience necessary to handle any issues that may come in between you and your trademark. Not only will they help you through the initial application process and provide you with the guidance and legal advice that you need but they will also help represent you if you ever have a legal issues with your trademark.

Unfortunately, there are situations where people will try to use your trademark as their own. This can cause many negative repercussions for your business and result in a number of issues that could cost your company?s reputation and cost you a great deal of money. However, if your company as a trademark attorney on their side they will have quality representation on their side that will help them deal with any legal trademark issues should they occur.

Estrogen mimics may delay puberty and honeybees hurting from pesticides

Fungus products among us
Fungal-derived estrogen mimics may delay puberty in girls, an ongoing study concludes. Experts have widely believed that the compounds would never be detectable in humans. Yet urine from 58 adolescents tested as part of a project called the Jersey Girl Study contained the estrogen mimics zearalenone ? which is produced by fungi that infect grains ? or zeranol, a synthetic muscle-boosting analog administered to livestock. Girls who ate beef the day before the testing excreted zeranol, and eating popcorn was linked to zearalenone. Compared with others their age, the girls most exposed to these compounds had shorter stature and were less likely to have reached puberty, Helmut Zarbl of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Piscataway reported March 12.

Bee-deviled by pesticides
Supposedly nontoxic quantities of crop pesticides can subtly disrupt honeybee behavior, new data show. Louisa Hooven of Oregon State University in Corvallis applied a trio of the chemicals to hive wax. All three widely taint U.S. hives. Queen bees tried to avoid the pesticide-laced wax, Hooven reported March 12 ? dramatically shifting where they laid eggs. Nurse or caretaker bees, which develop important daily activity cycles called circadian rhythms only as they mature into foragers, took substantially longer to develop the cycles if exposed to tainted wax. The higher the bees? pesticide exposures, the longer the delay.
