Yankees rally against Nathan for 5-4 win in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Eduardo Nunez hit a tying triple, Brent Lillibridge followed with a go-ahead single and the New York Yankees rallied against All-Star closer Joe Nathan in the ninth inning Tuesday night for a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.

New York's comeback got started when Vernon Wells drew a one-out walk against Nathan (1-1) and scored on Nunez's triple to deep center. Nunez stumbled on his way to third and practically flopped into the bag, then scored on Lillibridge's single to left.

Nathan had converted 15 consecutive save chances, and 31 of 32 this season. Texas had been 51-0 when leading after eight innings.

Mariano Rivera, who set up Nathan's save in the All-Star game a week earlier, struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 32nd save this season, extending his career record to 640.

Joba Chamberlain (2-0), the fourth Yankees pitcher, got help in his perfect eighth when center fielder Brett Gardner made two incredible catches ? one against the wall before his running, leaping grab to end the inning.

The Rangers scored their runs in the sixth, all of them unearned after Lillibridge's error at third base. Texas led 4-3 after Mitch Moreland greeted reliever Boone Logan with a two-run homer.

Akon

While Lupe Fiasco was busy sounding off on black America and shaming us for not ?valuing ourselves,? a popular African artist was offering a different perspective.Akon took to Instagram immediately after the ?not guilty? verdict was read in the George Zimmerman trial and suggested that blacks move back to Africa. According to the Konvict Muzik head, who is of Senegalese descent, we would receive much better treatment on the African continent.

?Every African American in the United States need to move their money, family, knowledge back to Africa were u will be treated like the royalty you are,? Akon captioned the below photo. ?You don?t deserve this treatment. This is not your country!!?

Canada train derailment puts brakes in spotlight

The deadly derailment of an oil tanker train in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, over the weekend has raised questions over how the unmanned 73-car train rolled away from where it had been stopped. The head of the train's railway company on Wednesday blamed the accident on an employee who he said had failed to properly set its hand brakes.

---

TWO SETS OF BRAKES

Such freight trains have an electronic air brake system and hand brakes, which do not require the train's power to be on. Investigators are looking into a fire reported on the same train less than about an hour before Saturday's disaster. A local fire official has said the train's engine was shut down - standard operating procedure dictated by the train's owners. When the train's power is turned off, the air brakes are disabled, and the hand brakes are needed.

---

SETTING ENOUGH HAND BRAKES

Hand brakes are set on individual cars. Edward Burkhardt, president and CEO of the railway's parent company, Rail World Inc., says an employee failed to properly set the hand brakes in this case. "We think he applied some hand brakes, but the question is did he apply enough of them," Burkhardt said. Investigators have said they are looking into both sets of brakes for the train.

---

PUTTING THEM TO THE TEST

Officials with Canada's transportation agency, Transport Canada, this week explained that such a train by law must have a "sufficient amount" of hand brakes set so the train doesn't move. Because size and weight vary by train, there is no predetermined number of brakes required. Instead, the train's locomotive engineer must perform a "push-pull" test before leaving the train to make sure enough hand brakes have been set.

---

WORKING ALONE

In this case, the train was manned by a single worker, the engineer. There are no rules against one-person crews, Luc Bourdon, Transport Canada's director general for rail safety, said this week. Montreal, Maine & Atlantic, the train's owner, successfully applied last year to have just a single operator on the line. Bourdon also said it is rare - but not against the rules - to leave a train unattended on a main line.

China's June auto sales rise 9.3 percent

BEIJING (AP) ? China's auto sales growth held steady in June and Japanese brands rebounded from a slump despite a credit crunch and slowing economic growth.

Auto sales rose 9.3 percent over a year earlier to 1.4 million vehicles, the China Association of Auto Manufacturers reported Wednesday. That was in line with May's 9 percent growth.

The strong sales could come as reassurance to global automakers that are looking to China, the biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold, to drive revenues amid weakness elsewhere.

June sales rose despite a shortage of credit in China's financial markets and indications economic growth weakened.

Total sales, which include trucks and buses, also grew strongly, rising 11.2 percent to 1.7 million vehicles, according to the CAAM.

Sales overall were better than expected, said Zhang Xin, an analyst at Guotai Jun'an Securities in Beijing.

"Lower prices are the main reason. The authorities encouraged consumers to spend money," said Zhang.

Chinese auto sales growth has decelerated steadily since mid-2012 as some major cities tried to curb congestion and smog by limiting new vehicle registrations.

"Expensive parking fees and licenses and limited room makes sales more difficult and limits the development of the auto industry," said Zhang. "The government should not encourage consumption before doing good planning."

Sales of Japanese brands rose 16.5 percent to 2.3 million vehicles, according to CAAM, improving from a slump that began last year amid tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over ownership of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

Chinese brands lagged the market again in June, the CAAM said, indicating domestic automakers were losing market share to global brands and their local partners.

Sales of Chinese brand autos rose 5.5 percent to 5.3 million vehicles. Sales of German brands rose 20.6 percent to 2.9 million vehicles and American brands were up 12.7 percent to 1.8 million vehicles.

General Motors Co. said June sales by the company and its Chinese joint venture partners rose 10.6 percent over a year earlier to 236,207 vehicles. Ford Motor Co. said its sales gained 44 percent to 75,254 vehicles.

Sales at Japan's Nissan Motor Co. fell 7.7 percent to 101,400 vehicles, though it said that decline was due partly to comparison with strong sales in the same month last year.

Germany's BMW said sales of its BMW and Mini brand vehicles rose 6.9 percent to 184,489 vehicles.

NBA Summer League Recap

nbanba

?

The first set of games for the NBA Summer League session began today in Orlando. As mentioned in earlier posts, several Cats have made their presence heard at the AmWay Center today.

Kentucky Players

-Terrence Jones gave the performance of today for the Houston Rockets. The king of glamour shots ended with 24 points and 12 rebounds on 9 of 13 shooting. Jones is battling with Greg Smith for power forward minutes for the upcoming season. Terrence played exceedingly well in the final games of the regular season and appears to continue his high level of play into next season.

-?Doron Lamb?showed the Orlando Magic why Kentucky fans always expected three goggles when Lamb shot from beyond the arc. Lamb tallied 13 points off of 3 treys and 2 assists. The Magic are in full rebuild mode which should offer Lamb plenty of playing time if he maintains a hot shooting hand.

-Daniel Orton, yes Daniel Orton, came up huge for the Thunder today with 15 points 4 rebounds 2 blocks and 2 steals to beat the Pacers. Orton appears to be in the best shape of his life in hopes to keep a spot on the NBA roster for the entire season. In the same game,?Deandre Liggins?scored 2 points and 3 rebounds. While the stat line isn?t great, Ed Isaacson of NBA Draft Blog explains the quality of Liggins? performance when I asked what he saw of him.

Other Top Performers

- Kyle Wiltjer impostor?Kelly Olynyk?looked great for the Boston Celtics today scoring 25 points along with 7 rebounds. Olynyk struggled defensively, but his offense carried the load for Brad Stevens? squad.

-?Grant Jerrett, the power forward out of Arizona, dropped 4 of 5 three pointers en route to 17 points to pace the Thunder although he did record 6 fouls.

-?Dwight Buycks, who I would have 0 chance of picking out of a lineup, had a very impressive game for the Pacers, recording a staggering 13 assists along with 12 points in just 25 minutes of play. Good job random D League player.

The final game of the night, Pistons-Nets, includes no UK players, but it is the debut of Peyton Siva.

Krauthammer: Muslim Brotherhood 'will lose badly' if it battles ...

On Friday?s ?Special Report? on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer predicted that if the Mohamed Morsi regime and the Muslim Brotherhood chose the route of going to war by creating its own military and fighting Egyptian forces instead of seeking a peaceful solution, the Muslim Brotherhood will lose.

?[The Muslim Brotherhood] is obviously the largest, the most organized and disciplined of all the elements, all the parties in Egypt,? Krauthammer said. ?However, it is not a majority. It isn?t even close to a majority. And what was so remarkable about the demonstrations that led to the overthrow of the government and about the people standing behind the chief of staff when he announced the coup, where you had representatives of the Christians, of the largest and most respected Sunni Muslim mosque and university, where you had even a representative of a far more radical Islamist movement, a newer party. So you had all the elements of society lined up against the Brotherhood, each with their own grievances. So, if the Brotherhood decides that it?s going to turn to violence, it?s going to lose because you have a wall-to-wall coalition against it.?

?The irony here is that the two most disciplined institutions in the country are the ones who will decide where this goes,? Krauthammer continued. ?The army has discipline, and the Brotherhood. And that?s why I think up until now the violence has been relatively restrained. The Brotherhood leadership, I think, understands that if it does an Algeria and decides it?s going to go and make war on the army, it?s going to lose and it will lose badly and be imprisoned and disperse or go back to the 1950s. If there is an outbreak, it?s going to come from a fringe of a fringe who are not under the discipline of the party. And that, I think, is possible. But that would be radical sort of al Qaida types who want to make this into a bloodbath. And they, if there are enough of them, it could actually provoke a bloodbath.?

Krauthammer?s co-panelist Charles Lane, editorial writer for The Washington Post, pointed out that under law the United States must suspend aid to Egypt, since its democratically-elected government was overthrown by a ?coup.?

But that was irrelevant according to Krauthammer, who suggested the United States would have little say in the resolution of the Egyptian turmoil. He also said the argument within the U.S. government should be about what?s in the best interest of the United States and not legalese.

?They don?t have a deadline. It?s up to the events themselves,? Krauthammer said. ?The Brotherhood has, you know, a few days or a week in which it can either reverse the revolution or decide it has to go either underground or an open opposition, but peacefully. And that will determine events. Nothing of the future of this revolution is going to depend on what happens in Washington. And I think [in] this argument, the word ?coup? is an example of how we are infected by legalism. The policy of the United States ought to be set by our national interests and not lawyers in the State Department.?

MoDaCo.SWITCH for HTC One will let you flip between Sense, Google Experience

The HTC One smartphone is now available with two different sets of software. You can buy a model from HTC which comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and the HTC Sense user interface. Or you can buy a model from the Google Play Store which comes with the stock Android experience.

Whether you prefer Google?s version of Android or HTC?s, there are a few features in HTC?s software that aren?t available with the Google Play edition, such was the Sense camera with support for HTC Zoe, ad support for the phone?s infrared port, which lets you use your phone as a TV remote.

But what if there was a way you could run both versions of Android on the same device, and switch between them with a tap of a button? Developer Paul O?Brien is working on a tool called MoDaCo.SWITCH which?ll let you do just that.

MoDaCo.SWITCH

The software will give users the best of both worlds, although it?ll eat up more storage space than running a single ROM and it will probably require rebooting (O?Brien hasn?t actually said much about how his software will work yet.

He has said that he?s also working on a custom ROM that will?really offer the best of both worlds though ? which lets users choose which parts of the HTC Sense and Google Play Edition ROMs they want to use.

O?Brien says there?s also been enough demand for a SWITCH app for the Samsung Galaxy S4 for him to consider working on that after the HTC One version is complete. That?s another phone that?s available with two different user interfaces. The Google Play Store offers a version with stock Android, while most Galaxy S4 phones are sold with Samsung TouchWiz software.

Red Wings add Alfredsson for 1 year, Weiss for 5

DETROIT (AP) ? Daniel Alfredsson is joining the Detroit Red Wings to make perhaps his final run at an elusive championship, and Stephen Weiss is in it for the long haul in the Motor City.

"I'm really excited to get this opportunity at this stage of my career to go for a Stanley Cup and fulfill a longtime dream," the 40-year-old Alfredsson said on a conference call.

Detroit got a $5.5 million, one-year deal done with Alfredsson on Friday afternoon, mere minutes after NHL teams could sign free agents. The Red Wings agreed to terms on a $24.5 million, five-year contract with Weiss a couple hours later.

"It's an extremely exciting day in Detroit and for our team," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "We felt we had some needs we wanted to fill. We wanted to get more scoring. We were challenged last year to score some goals.

"Daniel has been one of the great scorers in the National Hockey League and Weiss is one of the tremendous playmakers."

Alfredsson scored 426 goals and had 1,108 points ? ranking in the top six among active players in both categories ? with the Ottawa Senators, who failed to keep their captain for at least another season.

"I made a very difficult decision to leave Ottawa after 18 years and 17 seasons," he said. "I had nothing but great times in Ottawa. I didn't really see myself making a change a week ago, but as we got closer to free agency, thoughts started creeping in."

Weiss, meanwhile, jumped at the opportunity to be a part of a franchise that has played in 22 straight postseasons.

"Coming from Florida and being there for about 10 years, only playing in the playoffs one time, it was a pretty easy," he acknowledged.

Alfredsson won the Mark Messier Leadership Award after scoring 10 goals and making 16 assists in 47 games during the shortened season. He won the Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year in 1996 and was an All-Star for the sixth time in 2012.

The Swedish star joins a team with several players from his native country, including captain Henrik Zetterberg.

"Zetterberg, I talked to two or three times," Alfredsson said. "He was the one that I bounced ideas around with mostly."

Detroit hopes Alfredsson can help the franchise compete for a championship next season when it moves to the Eastern Conference. He and his contract may essentially end up replacing Damien Brunner and Daniel Cleary, both of whom are unrestricted free agents. Holland is holding out hope he can keep Cleary, but acknowledged Brunner will likely sign elsewhere.

Weiss fills a void as a second-line center the Red Wings needed.

"It was a big part of the appeal," he said.

Detroit's previous No. 2 center, Valtteri Filppula, agreed to a $25 million, five-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, whose general manager Steve Yzerman is a former teammate.

The 30-year-old Weiss was limited to playing just 17 games during the shortened season in Florida, a year after he had 20 goals and 57 assists for the Panthers. He had wrist surgery in March, three months before the Red Wings wasted no time adding him to the roster.

Weiss, who is from Toronto, has 145 goals and 394 points in his career that began with the Panthers during the 2001-02 season. He had a career-high 61 points during the 2008-09 season and scored a career-high 28 goals the next year.

Florida drafted Weiss No. 4 overall in 2001 while he was playing for the Plymouth Whalers in suburban Detroit.

"It is neat to come back to a city where I played before and watched the Wings, and wondered about playing for the franchise one day," he said. "It's kind of surreal."

Unheralded NFL Rookie Robert Gill Runs an Insane 25 Miles Per Hour In Hopes of Making Team

When it comes to trying to make an NFL roster, you could say Robert Gill pulled a fast one.

A very fast one.

Gill is an unusually old 29-year-old undrafted rookie with the Arizona Cardinals who is trying to snag a spot on the team?s roster. Considering his age and the fact he wasn?t drafted, he decided to think outside the box in order to gain some attention with this YouTube video in which he runs a ridiculous 25 miles per hour on a treadmill.

Gill, a wide receiver from Texas State, jumps on from a standing start, at which point his legs move like they?re on fast forward.

Gill?s feat is nothing to sneeze at ? Usain Bolt averaged ?only? 23.35 miles per hour when he set the world record in the 100-meter sprint in 2009.

(AP) ? A judge in Geneva has rejected an application from Shakira's ex-boyfriend seeking rights to one of her bank accounts.

Antonio de La Rua claims he should have access to one of Shakira's accounts because it holds most of the assets from their business partnership.

In documents dated June 17 and obtained by The Associated Press, the judge said that Shakira is the sole owner of the account.

De La Rua has worked as one of Shakira's business advisers. He said he and Shakira established an oral agreement to work professionally following their romantic split in 2011.

The judge said that de La Rua does not have enough evidence to prove the two reached a professional agreement and that there are no written agreements.

De La Rua has been waging an international fight against the Colombian singer, saying he shaped the "Shakira brand." He has filed lawsuits in New York and Los Angeles.

De La Rua is the son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua. He dated Shakira, whose songs include "Hips Don't Lie," for more than a decade and worked on some of her business deals.

Lawyers for de La Rua's didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment Wednesday.

Google Maps Street View Now Lets You Explore Thomas Jefferson's Digs

Nobody wants to spend their vacation day studying history, but if you're feeling particularly patriotic tomorrow, you can head on over to Google Maps where Thomas Jefferson's Monticello residence is now available to explore using Google Street View.

You can virtually wander around outside the property on its sprawling greens, or head indoors and explore everything from the main hall which doubled as a miniature museum, the dining room where he would have entertained other notable American figures, and his personal study which includes all of Jefferson's cutting-edge (at the time) gadgets.
